Volkswagen drives into the compact sedan segment with the launch of Ameo, at a price beginning at Rs. 5.14 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai), marginally lower than the price of its rival the DZire, which controls about 55% of the sub-four meter compact sedan market.

Ameo

The 1.2 liter Petrol engine which powers Ameo generates 74bhp of peak power and 110Nm of peak torque. Only the Petrol version is launched, while the diesel version may be on the way. Volkswagen claims that the Ameo is the made-for-India and made-in-India car.

From the basic variant, all variants will have dual air bags and ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), cruise control, rain sensing wipers, anti-pinch power windows, front center armrest and static cornering lights, all of which are a first in the segment.

Largely adhering to the “Polo” “Vento” design, the added features are the projector headlamps, fog lamps, alloy wheels, etc. with electronic features like touch screen multimedia music system with Mirror link, iPod Connectivity, Phonebook or SMS viewer, etc.

The Volkswagen Ameo is an upgrade from the Volkswagen hatchback siblings with similar design but extended features and “first in the segment” features for safety, comfort and luxury, as well.
