Mahindra has confirmed that it plans to launch two new electric vehicles by the end of 2016. The homegrown carmaker has been pioneering into the zero-emissions electric vehicles segment, while the electric-vehicles segment is in its infancy in India. There is still a long way to go but Mahindra is keen on introducing a fresh line-up of electric cars in India.

The Mahindra already introduced the e2o, after it acquired a major stake in Reva. The first launch was dubbed Reva, while the second generation Reva, the Reva-i, was named e2o. Just last month, Mahindra also launched the e-Verito.

At the 2nd National Workshop & Exhibition FAME India, Pawan Sachdeva, Senior General Manager, Mahindra-Reva, said that electric cars, still in its early stages in India, account only for a minuscule share of the automobiles sold in India. While only 753 fully-electric vehicles sold in India, China sold 1,76,627 units and the USA sold 1,15,262 units. Commenting on the same, Pawan Sachdeva added, “India needs to look at incentives for electric and hybrids again. In China, almost half of the cost of the green vehicle was incentivized. Even though it need not be that high here, but it certainly has to be higher than what it is.”

Mahindra clearly wants to pioneer and make an early name for itself in the fully-electric vehicles segment, before any competitors, as both the segment and the market are still in their infantile stages. Mahindra wants to add more options for buyers in the EV segment, while also add to their current product line-up to make for a wider portfolio.

The EV market faces three major challenges in India—the price of Electric cars, availability of charging infrastructure and distance covered by the car per full charge. Increase in sales volumes can work out better economies of scale but that can happen only with easy accessibility to charging booths. While companies have been working towards increasing battery life and distance-range of batteries, the government must incentivize sale of EVs and offer better tax structures for both manufacturer and customers.
