Recognized nationally as South India’s premier modern and contemporary art festival, ‘Yes Bank Art Bengaluru 2016’ started with a bang on 19 August 2016 with a Grand Opening Night that left the audience asking for more! The festival was declared open by Mr. SA Hussain - Chairman of KSTDC, Government of Karnataka and Mr. Irfan Razack - CMD, Prestige Group along with Mr. Rezwan Razack & Mr. Noaman Razack, in the presence of Ms. Uzma Irfan – Director, Prestige Group and Conceptualizer and Organizer – ‘Art Bengaluru’.

This was followed by a preview of the artworks and the evening then flowed into an energy-filled performance by one of global music’s brightest stars – celebrated musician, producer and composer, Karsh Kale and his Collective. The Collective, which performed in Bangalore after several years, drew in a very large, enthusiastic audience who were completely riveted by the performance.

The second night of Art Bengaluru was no different in spirit, with Bangalore’s youngsters coming in droves to dance to Wolfpack, a Swedish DJ duo that has been featured among the Top 100 DJs for two years in a row now. This annual art soiree, which is playing host to over 30 artists and 150 artworks, is a treat not just for art lovers alone, but also for anyone who enjoys art and culture in South India. With celebrated international and national artists coming together under one roof, screening of world cinema at the open air Amphitheatre, creative workshops for all age groups, talks by reputed artists and performances by global musicians, there is something for everyone. The theme of ‘Art Bengaluru 2016’ is to “Celebrate the World with the Spirit of India”.

This year’s edition has provided a platform for the global exchange of art and culture with participation from 8 international artists from France, China, Amsterdam, Netherlands, Israel and Peru, apart from an association with international cultural institutes including the Alliance Francaise, Instituto Cervantes, Italian Institute of Culture and the British Council. The festival offers an opportunity to enjoy a free, open-air screening of World Cinema from Spain and Italy – in addition to the classic Romeo and Juliet, to celebrate the year of Shakespeare.

Among the many workshops offered at Art Bengaluru is the Tea Appreciation Event by Sublime House of Tea. A combination of a talk and a cook-off, the event will be led by Anamika Singh, a professional tea-taster and Chef Michael Swamy – celebrated chef, food stylist, TV Chef host & producer. The event is on 26 August from 2pm to 4pm. Another workshop to look forward to is the Absolut India Cocktail Workshop with Yangdup Lama – a chance to learn the tricks of the trade from an industry specialist. The event is on 27 August between 4pm and 7pm.  ‘Art Bengaluru 2016’ will finish in style with a performance by one of the world’s leading percussionists, Sivamani and the Siraha Trio on 28 August 2016.

Sharing his thoughts on Art Bengaluru, Mr. SA Hussain - Chairman of KSTDC, Government of Karnataka said, “I am truly impressed with the incredible expanse of art and culture being promoted through this festival. Bangalore needs an annual art event like this to gain increased recognition as an art and culture hub and I appreciate Ms. Uzma Irfan’s valuable contribution to this cause. We hope to continue our association with Art Bengaluru and make this a calendar event for us in the years to come.” Commenting on this year’s line-up of activities, Uzma Irfan – Conceptualiser & Organizer, ‘Art Bengaluru’ and Director, Prestige Group said, “With art shoppers from around the world gravitating towards India, the market is a rapidly growing hotspot.

In many international art discussions, the Indian market has been named as a destination to watch out for, with its growing auction market and the artworks themselves combining many global influences. ‘Art Bengaluru’ strives to fuel this growth by giving an opportunity for artists to showcase their work, not just to art lovers but to the rest of the city as well. To keep the international spirit of our art alive, we have invited distinguished artists from different countries to display their work in the heart of the city, alongside our own national gems. We invite each and every one of you to come forward and make the most of this festival. We also encourage schools to bring in their students to create an increased awareness of art among them.”

Mr. Rana Kapoor, MD & CEO, YES BANK and Chairman, YES Institute added, “YES BANK is proud to support the 7th edition of Art Bengaluru; South India’s leading art festival, which is extraordinarily shaping India’s contemporary art scene. We believe amalgamation of the corporate sector and the Art fraternity will provide new professional avenues for our talented and creative youth and strengthen the vibrant socio-cultural fabric of our Nation. This year, the festival is themed ‘Spirit of India’, a vision and identity that resonates strongly with the focus of our YES Culture initiative to further enhance India’s importance in the global Art landscape and celebrate India’s rich and diverse culture and heritage on a global scale.”
