Kadali Review: Story

Two young men, Sam Fernando [Arvind Swamy] and Bergmans [Arjun] attends an Christian missionary in their teens with an intention to become priest at church. But both of them have different point of views and reasons why they prefer to become holly priest. Arjun gets thrown out of missionary because of mistake which he commits and Arvind swamy make him get caught, this creates rivalry between them. Years pass by, Sam turns as Church father and Arjun turns a local evil don. Arvind become guardian of Thomas [ Gautham Karthik] and teaches him all good deeds in Bible and on other side Thomas gets attracted towards Arjun. Rest of the story deals with how life of Thomas gets affected by evil thoughts of Arjun, good preaching from Sam and which path he chooses in his life.

Kadali Review: Star Performances

Arvind swamy made his re-entry into films after a long 12 years gap and he performed with natural case as father Sam. He still carry's the glow, charm in his face and his expression at key scenes are good, especially at emotions scenes he makes you spell bound. Arjun gave excellent performance in Bergmans character as brutal guy. He looked apt in negative grey shade role and his own voice added natural feel, weight to his character. Debutant Goutham Karthik and Thulasi Nair looked promising, Gautham showed nice variation in his role and Thulasi attracts as bubbly girl . Lakshmi Manchu character is short yet important and she made her presences felt in the movie.

Kadali Review: Direction, Music & Technical Aspects

Mani Ratnam skills and potential in direction departments can't be rated any day and this continues to this flick too. But one thing is for sure there are few scenes which can be seen and filmed by main sir only. Rajiv menon's cinematography is far excellence and especially climax, natural feel of fisherman village, seas has been presented beautifully. Music from Rahman is of top standard, you will go humming couple of songs after leaving theatres, but background score is little disappointing. Sreekar Prasad editing could be lot better and he could have edited many dragging scenes in second half.

Kadali Review: Analysis

Mani Ratnam has always comes up with unique story line and this film is not an exception but he added a fresh debut actors forcing a love story between them. You will definitely find, sense and get what a typical Mani Ratnam film usually have and the best part of the films are Arvind swamy, Arjun, fresh lead pair and brilliant technical team excluding editing. When we go into worst part, it includes slow dragging narration, no commercial values included, lot of preaching about good & bad from Bible high lighting Christianity.   First half the film is little interesting with major characters being introduced and disclosing the movie plot to the audiences. Excellence of Mani Ratam direction can be viewed in first 15 minutes, the way he dispose every character and especially the childhood of Thomas character. Scenes between father Sam and stubborn Thomas are good, the difference of opinions but Arjun, Arvind swamy regarding evil and good deeds are nice. Lyrics of couple of songs make you laugh in the hall and their picturization looks plane flat without life. Second half is where the love track between leads actually fall in but the romantic tack is unimpressive with less clarity of what happening between them. There are countless dragging slow scenes, which test your patiences, popular songs like 'Gunjukuna' and 'Madigi' running in background will also disappoint you . Only best part in second half is climax which is a visual treat with excellent sea episode along with discussions of Arjun, Arvind and finally Thomas taking path of good against evil are canned beautifully .
