The movie's story revolves around a fighter pilot Varun (Karthi) and a doctor Leela (Aditi Rao Hydari). They have contrastingly different characters, yet find themselves attracted. The hero appears strong outside, but softer inside, while the heroine is fragile outside, but headstrong inside. The movie has more love and war. The hero is in Pakistan jail and escapes from the jail and the journey of their romance forms the crux of the story, which has a happy ending.
Cheliya is the most expensive film ever made by Maniratnam’s home production banner, Madras Talkies. The director also went abroad to shoot for the film for the very first time in his illustrious career. The Oscar winning music scorer AR Rahman has composed music for Cheliya and it's songs have received positive feedback from music lovers. Karthi's stylish look in the movie is nice to see and his chemistry with Aditi Rao Hydari is a perfect match. All the rest of the actors have done justice to their roles.
Maniratnam making deserves a big round of applause. AR Rahman had rocked with his terrific music. Ravi Varman had looked after the cinematography work neatly. He had brought the beautiful destinations of India into his camera superbly. A Sreekar Prasad had done the editing part amazingly. The technical aspects has no negative feedback and everything is made excellently. The background scoring is the asset for the movie. The movie's Art director Amaran and production designer Sharmishta Roy had worked together on designing the set during the first schedule, choosing to enhance existing backgrounds rather than to create lavish sets.
The first half of the movie moves bit fastly and thrillingly, whereas the second half is bit dragged. The movie has more war scenes and romantic scenes also. Karthi had acted as a Pilot Officer and his clean shave and slim body adds more beauty to the movie. The songs are well made and a perfect take on War and Love with many emotions. Indian Air Force was given the priority which has shown the power of India in Kargil War of 1999. Maniratnam, AR Rahman and Vairamuthu's combo had worked very well in Cheliya. Watch the romantic movie this weekend and have a superb feeling of love that is built in you.
