Tamil cinema has seen lots of gangster movies. But very few movies were realistic and have tasted success. On other hand the rest of the movies failed miserably. Let's see few of the movies which were critically acclaimed but failed at Box-Office.

Pudhupettai (2006)

One of the best gangster flicks in Kollywood. Pudhupettai covers the negative side of Tamil Nadu-it's underworld network. Critically-acclaimed director Selvaragavan depicts the harsh reality of the life of an underworld don. The movie was critically acclaimed, but failed at Box-Office as Dhanush never had market value that time. The surprise factor in climax was the best thing and it is the best move from the director. lood is so common in the film that you get used to the sight of red everywhere. However, bloodshed is justified in this film compared to the others. Dhanush has obviously worked his heart out for the movie. Yuvan Shankar Raja's music is an added plus too.

Aaranya Kaandam (2010)

Thiagarajan Kumararaja directed this cult classic material and the movie is all about an action drama between two rival mafia gang which happens on a single day when a bag of cocaine is stolen by two unknown people. This is first Neo-noir film in Tamil cinema. The best part about this movie is it keeps sus hooked plain and simple. It's gritty. It explores a certain madness that very rarely is explored in India Cinema and that is what has fetched the movie National award. Two biggest factors which has made the movie a successful one is Music and Crisp editing. Even the cinematography is done in a stylish manner. One of the best under-rated movies which went unnoticed.
