In what is being hailed as a significant move, the government of Andhra Pradesh has reportedly cracked the whip on realtors, who are very much eager to make quick bucks by exploiting the upcoming capital region near the Vijayawada-Guntur-Mangalagiri-Tenali Urban Development Authority (VGMTUDA) region. AP has taken control of the land related powers of many villages in this area which is being seen as an important step for preventing the land from falling into realtors hands and is expected to make way for the smooth land pooling for the new capital. The government has reportedly suspended the powers of various gram panchayats falling under VGMTUDA jurisdiction regarding development of land, house plots and building activities outside grama khantam i.e. residential areas. Sources say that decision to restore these powers was taken for safeguarding the interests of the proposed capital city. When the real estate boom happened in Hyderabad, many families had a tough time due to the land mafia so this move will ensure such things don’t repeat.
