GAIL Pipeline project has caused more ripples in Tamil Nadu political circle. Recently the Supreme Court permitted to do the GAIL project. This project allows installment of pipes below cultivated lands. So farmers are a lot worried as agriculture will completely be demolished.
In April 2013, the state government issued a notification, urging GAIL to give up its present alignment of Kochi- Kuttanad -Bangalore-Mangalore gas pipeline, passing through seven districts of Tamil Nadu covering 310km.
Now in review petition, Tamil Nadu Government said that GAIL was not acting as a responsible one. The petition said, "GAIL is right now acting as a pure commercial entrepreneur. It is least bothered about miseries of farmers, It is driven purely by profit motive and it doesn't bother about the change of alignment along roads only because of cost factor.
This will affect lots of farm lands." GAIL however says the rights of farmers will not be affected. The petition further said, "Laying pipelines below roads is more expensive than laying pipelines under the fields, GAIL does not want to conceive and consider this proposal."
