The Kumbha Mela of Tamil Nadu - Mahamaham has started in Tamil Nadu. This takes place in temple town of Kumbakonam and thousands of devotees are rushing towards the spot to take a dip in Mahamaham. This happens once in 12 years congregation in Tanjavur district.


This year Kumbakonam administration is expecting a crowd of ten lakh devotees from India and overseas. Most of the devotees are planning for a holy dip. The event will take place for ten days and the attendance is expected more during the culmination of the event. It will be on February 22nd.


Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalitha had a review meeting regarding the preparations of Mahamaham. She had discussion with State Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR and CE) department. Police also made elaborate security arrangements to prevent stampede.


As per reports, more than twenty five thousand policemen and 3000 home guards were deployed in town. A bath in the holy tank is considered to bring good fortune. This tank has 20 wells named after 20 holy rivers flowing across the country.
