The animal rights activists and some members of parliament (MPs) have urged the government to increase the penalties for animal abuse and the penalty for animal abuse is Rs 10 as of now, the maximum penalty is Rs 50.


The increase in the number of animal abuse incidents in the recent past and it includes the assault on the police horse Shaktiman that ultimately resulted in her death, the brutal killing of puppies in Delhi and Bengaluru as well as the acid attack on a pony in Hyderabad.


The letters from the MPs cutting across party follows the filing of a new private member bill by MP Poonam Mahajan (BJP) at the beginning of the new parliament session and the minimum penalty for PCA Act is Rs 10 and the maximum is Rs 50 and the law has not been amended for more than six decades from 1960.


Ambika Nijjar the Advocate and Legal Advisor for People for Animals have said that support from leaders across different parties has gives them the strength to fight for this vulnerable section of the society and they hope that the Government listens to the plea of its party men and does everything possible to increase the penalties in the PCA Act.
