The latest buzzword that has become widespread in Andhra politics
is the `special category status'. While the politicians are in blame
game, central government is making it very clear that Andhra Pradesh
cannot get the grade. This is a very big blow for the residuary state
which is in dire need of support.
Meanwhile,
analysts feel New Delhi is reiterating the promise for granting
additional funds to the state for bridging the high fiscal deficit, and
also for building the new capital city of Amaravati. The only criteria
which the state of Andhra Pradesh can lay claim is its non-viable nature
of finances.
The state’s high fiscal deficit
which was Rs 17,004.91 crore (2015-16) and it is expected to touch Rs
20,497.15 crore by the end of this financial year. Hence it is being
said that chief minister Chandrababu Naidu should rather focus his
attention towards securing special central grants for rebuilding Andhra
Pradesh.
This is one region which had suffered a
lot thanks to the bifurcation. At this point, it would be unwise for
TDP to cut ties with BJP because the state needs center's support in a
large way. The implementation of Special Grants would be a much needed
boon for the state at this juncture.
