The Tamil Nadu governor K. Rosaiah has sent a letter to the chief election commissioner (CEC) recommending that the elections to the Aravakurichi and Thanjavur constituencies should be conducted at the earliest and preferably before June 1.

The governor has held a meeting with the chief electoral officer (CEO) of Tamil Nadu on May 23 in this regard after receiving petitions from V Senthil Balaji and M Rengasamy , the AIADMK candidates for Aravakurichi and Thanjavur, respectively and after this, the CEO has sent a report to the election commission on May 24.

Meanwhile the AIADMK duo has told in their representation to the governor that the deferring was without any authority of law and without the consent of the governor and deferring the elections would shorten the tenure of the elected member.

The governor has cited relevant provisions contained in the Representation of People Act, 1951, and the Constitution of India as well as the observations in the Supreme court judgment in the Bhim Singh vs Election Commission of India, 1996 (4) SCC 188.
