Sources have stated that on Friday as many as 18 people, including 6 women and a girl, were killed in an accident involving a bus, lorry and a car at Melumalai in Shoolagiri and the multiple crash left close to 30 persons injured, where ten of them have sustained grievous injuries and were referred to hospitals in Salem and Bengaluru. 


The accident was caused by a groundnut-laden Krishnagiri bound lorry that breached the median on the Hosur-Krishnagiri National Highway and has crashed into a private passenger bus and a car and the bus from Krishnagiri to Mallur was carrying 41 passengers, while the car with four passengers was tailing the bus near Melumalai.


The Chief Minister Jayalalitha has expressed her condolences to the families of the 18 persons who died in the accident and in a statement, she has said she had immediately asked the Krishnagiri Collector and SP to rush to the accident spot and they promptly took up the rescue work.


The accident shut down the Krishnagiri-Hosur national highway for over three hours, leading to a long-winding line of vehicles. Ms. Jayalalitha has announced a solatium of Rs 1 lakh each to the families of 18 victims and Rs 50,000 each to the injured from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
