Sources have added that the maintenance of the largest national flag, fluttering on one of the tallest poles in the country, is turning out to be a huge headache for the Telangana government with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) citing difficulties in upkeep due to financial constraints.

An official of HMDA has stated that the cash strapped HMDA now has said that it can't afford to spend Rs 5 lakh per month for the flag's upkeep and each time the flag is damaged, a replacement costs about Rs 1.9 lakh apart from the maintenance cost, electricity charges for illumination of the flag and the surrounding area requires several Lakhs a year.

Meanwhile the experts have raised doubts regarding the durability of the material being used in the flag and they have said that the flags are bound to get damaged since they are made of polyester and Pochampally is being seen as a possible replacement option.

It is also stated that the use of Pochampally material could come with its own complications. While the current flag made with polyester weighs about 65 kg, pochampally will increase the weight of the flag and experts have said that even though it is be better suited to withstand winds.
