It is stated that an innocuous prerecorded voice message "The number you are trying is not in use" has embarrassed the Tamil Nadu government no end in the Madras high court on Friday, just when the government was trying to paint a rosy picture of its liquor policy and its tremendous efforts at rehabilitation.

The first bench of Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice R Mahadevan has asked a court officer to dial the toll-free helpline for alcoholics that the state has claimed worked 24x7 and it has started with a PIL against the liquor policy, filed by K Balu, president of Advocates Forum for Social Justice.

It is said that on the rehabilitation front, it has said the state had 544 de-addiction centers and several experts, counselors, social workers and academics to help addicts kick the habit and so for this, it has said, the government operated a toll-free helpline that worked round the clock.

Meanwhile on a directive from the bench a court officer dialed the number (104) and has put his cell phone on speaker mode and when the prerecorded message has showed up the state's claims, an amused bench remarked.
