It is comingout that Andhra Pradesh will be having a new canal top solar power project at Rajamundry. The New and Renewable Energy Development Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Limited recently carried out a survey on the feasibility of a canal top solar power project at  Gollavanitippa village of Bhimavaram rural mandal in West Godavari and sent a detailed report to the Union Government giving its consent for the same.

The new canal top solar power project costs Rs 8crs and is of one MW capacity. Works are expected to start in two months' time the moment project gets consent from the central government. NEDCap earlier started similar project on the same canal at about 1.2 km stretch to generate 1 mw power per day. The project executed by BHEL was  7.23crores and AP CM Chandra Babu Naidu will inaugurate it in the second week of July.

Even before the inauguration, the project started generating power and around 10 villages are getting uninterrupted and quality power from it. Nedcap decided to extend the project as the first one turned out to be a successful one. As such solar panels will be fixed on canal top at a width of 10 metres by installing iron poles in the canal which is having a depth of about six feet, to support the structure at a distance of about 1.2 km.

Nedcap will call for tenders once the Centre give its consent. Union ministry of new and renewable energy will provide 30 per cent of the total estimated cost of the project as subsidy. The power generated from the upcoming project will be sent to state power grid through a 33/11 kv power substation at Gollavanitippa. Nedcap sells solar power to APEPDCL at a cost of Rs 6.80 per unit. More than 25000 people in and around 10 villages in Bhimavaram rural mandal will get uninterrupted power supply.
