Traffic violations are increasing in the country irrespective of hefty fines. Despite various laws, citizens find undue pleasure in violating rules with drunk driving, jumping signals, underaged driving recklessly and killing many, driving without licence,helmets etc. Every day India is witnessing 400 deaths due to traffic violations. 1.5 lakh people die and another 3 lakh get crippled in  five lakh road accidents a year.


This resulted in many hit and run cases leading to loss of lives and Union Government in a tough measure approved Motor Vehicle (Amendment) bill 2016. Under these bill, very heavy penalties are proposed in traffic violations. 


According to the new act approved by the cabinet, drunk-driving will now attract Rs 10,000 fine. Over speeding invites fine of  Rs 1,000-4,000  and as per the bill, driving without insurance will be punishable with Rs 2,000 fine and/or three-month imprisonment, while driving without helmets will attract Rs 2,000 fine and 3-month suspension of licence.


Juvenile offenders will be dealt strictly and owner/guardian will be deemed guilty and vehicle registration will be cancelled. Hit and run cases, bill proposes compensation up to Rs 2 lakhs. Earlier it was Rs 25000. In case of death due to hit-and-run, a compensation up to Rs 10 lakh would be provided to the victim's family.
