Bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh just before 2014 elections resulted in huge controversy. The way then UPA government headed by Congress proceeded ahead with the bifurcation closing the doors of the parliament and the pepper spray act sent shock waves across the country.

The unilateral decision by Sonia Gandhi and the then PM Manmohan Singh increased doubts whether it was done only for political and electoral gains. Center went ahead with the bifurcation despite huge protests across Andhra Pradesh. All politicians, NGOs approached Supreme Court against bifurcation. 


According to the latest Supreme Court agreed t  examine the constitutional validity of the March 1, 2014 notification to bifurcate Andhra Pradesh into two states of AP and Telangana from June 2, 2014.


Supreme Court bench consisting of Chief Justice J.S. Khehar and Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, admitted a batch of petitions filed by former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh Kiran Kumar Reddy, former ministers and MLAs to declare the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2014 as unconstitutional as being violative of the basic structure of the Constitution, having been enacted without following the due procedure of law.

When the CJI pinted out that Telangana people wanted new state, counsel made clear that there was no formal request from the State of AP for bifurcation and yet the division took place. However, additional solicitor-general P.S. Patw-alia said due procedure was followed.
