Chennai sources have stated that it would be a long weekend for students and those working in government offices in Tamil Nadu, as the Tamil Nadu government has declared a public holiday on January 17, in view of the 100th birth anniversary of former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran.
It was stated that the public holiday would apply to government offices, various Boards and Corporations constituted by the government, public sector undertakings, local bodies, banks, including cooperative banks, industrial establishments, schools, colleges and all educational institutions.
The A G.O. to this effect under the Negotiable Instruments
Act, 1881, would be notified in an extraordinary issue of the State government
gazette.
Meanwhile the government had also requested other organizations to consider granting the public holiday to their employees considering the significance of the day.
