The Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad captured national attention for all wrong reasons. The apathy of the hospital authorities to the patients, rampant corruption, unhygienic conditions shocked everyone.

Telangana Health Minister Dr.C.Laxma Reddy made a surprise visit to the hospital to take stock of the situation. However Hospital authotiries came to know about the Minister's visit much ahead and quickly changed everything doing a  spit & polish to hide dark underbelly.

Wajid Mehdi, volunteer of Helping Hand, who was present at the hospital exposed the authorities saying “Sanitation workers sprang into action as soon as they got to know that the minister was visiting the hospital. While until Sunday people had to run from pillar to post to avail wheelchairs and stretchers, the situation turned around on Monday ,“

It is known that huge controversy erupted when a patient entered the hospital and due to lack of wheel chairs,he made his way with his son's toy cycle. At first authorities blamed the patient but later they were caught redhanded.

Despite the efforts of the hospital authorities to paint a rosy picture, they got exposed as it is comingout that staff earn a whopping Rs 15k per month only from bribes. Patients have to cough up for everything they need from the staff.

Investigations exposed the dark side in the hospital. It is much more wide spread and deep-rooted than it meets the eye. Added to it is the patient's woes are the extremely unhygienic conditions and poor services that they, and their families, are left to battle.

Hajra Begum, sister of Khaja Pasha, who succumbed to Haemophilia on March 18 says “My brother was admitted to the hospital in January.During his treatment, we had to pay up to `50 three times a day to the housekeeping staff to avail their services. Apart from this, we had to bribe the ward boys with another `200 to get us an injection or medicines,“

More than 3000 patients visit the hospital and all of them get harassed on one or the other pretext.  Prerana, a dentist shared how she had to bribe the ward boys, every time her grandfather shifted from one ward to the other.“And this was happening constantly. After settling in one ward, he was shifted again to ward no 6. Every time he was shifted, ward boys demanded `chai paani',“

All the ward boys who are outsourced get a salary of Rs 12000, he salaries of housekeeping staff is about `7,800 (including provident fund and state insurance). Apart from it they make a whopping `7,500 to `15,000 from `chai paani' demands.
Mahalaxmi who had come from Tandur, Vikharabad. “I was amazed when a housekeeping staff told me that I would need to pay some money to get a fresh bed sheet,“ S Nagaraju, housekeeping incharge says “There are only 250 sanitation workers, 20 supervisors and 200 ward boys working in three shifts. The required manpower in each department is 400,“

He then tried to shift the blame on the patients saying “Several patients take the wheelchair and fail to return it. They avail it from the OP and then leave it at some other ward.Ward boys then have to bring it back. Therefore, they seek money so that there is a sense of accountability among patients,“
