The warring factions of AIADMK got huge shock from the Election Commission. In a blow to the dreams of Sasikala and Pannerselvam factions who have been waging bitter battle to own the popular and prestigious 'TWO Leaves' symbol of AIADMK, Election Commission temporarily froze the symbol thus preventing both the factions from using the party name in the upcoming by election in Jayalalithaa's Dr.RK.Nagar constituency slated for April 12.

This is a setback to Sasikala faction as freezing of the symbol gave legitimacy to the Pannerselvam faction. They have been claiming that they are the “original” AIADMK since the latter’s appointment as AIADMK General Secretary was not valid.

Right after the tragic death of Jayalalithaa, AIADMK factions took to streets their fight for power and legacy of Jayalalithaa. Infact this is not the firsttime AIADMK's TwO leaves symbol is frozen. In 1988 Election Commission froze the symbol when  VN Janaki and J. Jayalalithaa factions staked claim to the symbol and the party, but was allotted to the AIADMK after the party united under late Jayalalithaa.

EC in its order said “Neither of the two groups led by petitioners (E. Madhusudhanan, O. Panneerselvam and S Semmalai) and the respondents (V.K. Sasikala and T.T.V. Dhinakaran) shall be permitted to use the name of the party ‘All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’, simplicitor.Neither of the aforesaid two groups shall also be permitted to use the symbol “Two Leaves” reserved for AIADMK,”
