People of Two Telugu states Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are celebrating Telugu New Year, Ugadi in a religious and traditional manner. People of Karnataka too are celebrating their new year along with Maharashtra.

Ugadi falls in March or April of the Gregorian calendar and is observed on the first day of the Hindu lunisolar calendar month of Chaitra.Yugadi or Ugadi derives its name from the  Sanskrit words yuga (age) and ādi (beginning): "the beginning of a new age".


 Yugadi or Ugadi falls on "Chaitra Shudhdha Paadyami" or the first day of the bright half of the Indian month of Chaitra. People offer prayers, go to temples wearing new clothes and eat Ugadi Pachadi. 


Ugadi Pachadi is prepared with seasonal ingredients including raw mango, neem, jaggery, tamarind and also has chilly and salt and the six tastes in it signify the flavours of life such as happiness, sorrow, anger, bitterness, surprise and fear.

Before eating the Pachadi, people read the following Mantra. 
“Shathayur vajradehathwam
Sarvasampad pradam thathaa !
Sarvarishta haram kurve
Nimba prathashanam shubham !!”
Shloka means 'attain a healthy body, gain wealth,destroy negativity and consume the neem leaves'


People enjoy Ugadi by hearing to Panchanga Shravanam recited by the pandits(avadhanis). Panchanga Shravanam includes five parts in it- Tidhi, Varam (week), Nakshatram (star), Yogam, Karanam and it is more than yearly predictions of individuals,state and the country and infact the entire world considering the planetary positions.
