The Supreme Court of India today dashed the dreams of four rapists of Nirbhaya by confirming their death penalty. Five men and a juvenile brutally raped and tortured 23-year-old Jyoti Singh in a moving bus in bringing shame to national capital Delhi in December 2012. While one of the rapists was assaulted and killed in jail, juvenile escaped death sentence due to his age. 


On December 16 2012, the physiotherapy student and her friend climbed onto a bus in south Delhi, assured by the driver that they would be dropped off at their destination. The woman was gang-raped by six men for hours, brutalised with an iron rod and her intestines were pulled out.

Lower and higher courts of the country sentenced the remaining four to death. The four rapists appealed to Supreme Court to convert their death sentence to life term. Supreme Court of India which extensively heard their appeal reserved its judgment today.

Supreme Court of India today delivered the judgment and confirming death penalty it felt the crime as a "story of a different world". Three judges while confirming the death sentence said "If ever a case called for hanging, this was it,"

Court referred to the dying declaration of Nirbhaya and said the "brutal and demonic" crime had been proved beyond doubt. In its 429 page order Supreme Court used the words "Gruesome", "gross", "sadistic" and "beastly". The Supreme Court verdict was welcomed to loud applause.
