Thrissur sources have stated that currently ailments, torture, lack of care and medical negligence are taking a toll on captive elephants which was claimed by animal rights activists. It was stated that the death of four elephants in the past few weeks had increased the death number of elephants to fourteen by this year.



As per latest report it was stated that Thripunithura Poornathyayeesan Narayanan which had died recently at Thrissur where elephants of the Cochin Devaswom Board are currently tethered.  Mr. Venkatachalam, the secretary of Heritage Animal Task Force had stated that it had no teeth and had been starving for the past sixty days and the elephant was found to tether in dirty surroundings without veterinary care.

Sources have reported that elephants need to walk minimum of eighteen hours and it should drink lots and lots of water. Ailments results because of absence of exercise, lack of food of their own choice and insufficient water intake. Further it was stated that medical negligence is another reason for the death of elephants.
