Punjab was one state which suffered divisions when India was created and later it was trifurcated into Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh even though there was strong resistance just like bifurcation of AP. As a result of the bifurcation process, sources say that Haryana and HP progressed well while Punjab witnessed severe slowdown in industrial manufacturing as a result of tax rebates and other benefits given to new states surrounding it. This resulted in high costs of manufacturing in Punjab and also high taxes and high prices for products that killed local industry and it took two decades for the state to even realise how it failed miserably in this sector. In the same manner, it is being said that if the current 5 year special status is given to Seemandhra as promised and if it is extended further, then Telangana may face Punjab experience from which it is yet to recover!
