Newspaper and TV blitz is creating a great aura over the top leaders of the political parties. At the national level we conclude that Rahul and Modi, the Prime Ministerial hopeful are real great leaders. At the State Level, in the soon to be broken up Andhra Pradesh, KCR in one piece and Chandra Babu Naidu’s in the two pieces of the State are supposed to be the CM hopefuls. All these are claimed to be very brilliant, astute, etc. How good they are really? Rahul Gandhi mainly harps on denigrating Modi. The oft repeated charge is that the Gujarat model for economic development touted by Modi does not work. Elsewhere, OK it does not work. But why? Has it worked in Gujarat, or has it failed there also? What are its deficiencies? Rahul has not bothered to educate us. Is it because he does not know it himself? Modi is touted as a Strong, Decisive Leader. He has been announced as the BJP’s PM candidate after a marathon struggle. Even now there is subtle undercurrent of opposition for his candidature. But one very striking - shall we say, failure? – is that he has not done his home work. Particularly in distributing tickets for election. If he is such a great administrator and strong leader, he should have done his home work in identifying suitable candidates for the various constituencies, and pacified the disappointed and disgruntled. He has not done it and the whole thing has become a public circus. If he cannot anticipate and solve the problems in his own home turf and allows things to fester, what sort of decisive leader is he? If he does not have the knack to pour oil on troubled waters in his backyard how can he inspire voters all over the country to believe that deliverance for us all is in his hands?  Less said about KCR, is better. He comes out as a very slippery customer. TDP’s Naidu has evolved a famous theory: that the two parts which AP will be split into are like his two eyes. Bur giving the lie to his theory, he managed to see that one eye is shining and bright, while the other eye (the Seemandhra eye) he managed to ensure that it is blind and bleeding. Now Naidu is unable to quell rebellion within his own ranks, he is unable to honour the seat sharing alliance with BJP and is having to roll back the alliance. He is dithering and BJP says that his tantrums are unbearable. If he can’t manage his own people how can he inspire the voters to believe that he will be a good CM?
