Prime ministerial candidate of India's main opposition, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Narendra Modi, who invoked sentiments in the name of a Kargil war hero while campaigning in northern Himachal Pradesh, said he was deeply hurt with the criticism and distortion of his remark by political opponents. Earlier on April29, Modi was addressing an election rally in Palampur, the hometown of the fallen soldier of 1999 Kargil war, Captain Vikram Batra, when he referred to Batra's catch-phrase of "Yeh Dil Maange More" (the heart wants more) to seek votes for all four seats from Himachal Pradesh in the ongoing parliamentary polls. However, his remark evoked criticism from political opponents and from late Captain Batra's parents. "I have come to know that political opponents distorted my remark. I am deeply hurt. Vikram Batra is the beloved son of our motherland. He sacrificed his life for the nation. Is it an offence if he is respectfully remembered? His parents have also sacrificed for the nation. I bow before them also," said Modi. The late soldier's father, G L Batra, condemned the remark made by Modi. "This kind of speech does not bring glory, because he remembered the brave soldier at a time when election is near,"said G L Batra.
