Those who are in jail undergoing a life sentence punishment should not be released before the completion of the term imposed as punishment on them. This is what the highest Judiciary of the country, Supreme Court has opined for the latest. This opinion was let out by the Supreme in the enquiry process taking place in a petition filed by the Central Government. There was a decision taken by the Tamilnadu state Government to reduce the punishments of the life sentenced victims in the assassination case of Late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and release them with immediate effect. The decision was challenged by the then Central Government of UPA and a case was filed at the Supreme Court. Supreme Court in this regard has issued notices to all states to express their opinions in the argument of the Center to take permission from the Central Government before releasing any victims undergoing punishment, who were confirmed as victims in the cases enquired by the Central beauro of investigation. These were issued by the bench headed by Chief Justice RM Lodha. Recalling the incident, TN Govt of Jayalalithaa had decided to release seven prisoners undergoing life punishment in Rajiv’s assassination case. The then ruling UPA Government had challenged this decision of Tamilnadu state Government. Even the newly formed Government of Modi has supported the argument of previous Government. Time till 18th July is given to states and the next hearing is scheduled on 22nd July.
