The Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is contemplating high speed inter-city rail corridors, often referred to as ‘Bullet Trains' spread over 1,141 plus kilo meters and connecting all district headquarters and major cities, towns of Telangana State. It is aimed to increase economic activity and mobility in Telangana state in the proposed 11 corridors for introducing high speed trains, often referred to as ‘Bullet Trains'. The concept note for the project by the HMDA underscores the need for all district towns of the new State to develop in parallel to Hyderabad city. The Comprehensive Transportation Study (CTS) for the city too had suggested corridors to connect Nizamabad, Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, Warangal, Khammam, Karimnagar, Sangareddy, Medak, Vikarabad and Adilabad. The Comprehensive Transportation Study for the city has suggested that the proposed high speed trains originate at different and convenient points on the 158-km-long Outer Ring Road (ORR) that circles the city beyond the outskirts. “Concept is to ensure that one would be able to reach most of the headquarters within an hour at the most. This kind of shuttling speed will be crucial for the district towns to grow in sync with Hyderabad,” an official with the HMDA pointed out. “The idea is to increase the economic activity and mobility in the State for which high speed inter-city rail corridors have been proposed to all the district headquarters and also the major towns,” said HMDA Commissioner Neerabh Kumar Prasad. HMDA is looking at engaging consultants to carry out feasibility for these identified corridors and have detailed project reports prepared and financial assistance for the same sought from the Ministry of Urban Development. At an earlier meeting of the Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority on high speed trains, the railway officials were learnt to have said that the existing tracks may not be able to cater for high-speed of inter-city railway trains and would need exclusive Right of Way (RoW). This is twist in this news.
