Election Commission started to work on delimitation of constituencies in Guntur district after the division of the state. In 2004, Guntur had second highest number of Assembly Segments (19) in AP after East Godavari (21). With the delimitation of the constituencies in 2009, the number comes down to 17. After the division of the state, AP would get another 50 Assembly Segments in 13 districts.
It is expected that 5 Assembly Segments would likely to increase in Guntur district. As per buzz, Duggirala and Kuchinapudi constituencies will take place again in Guntur district. These two segments were scrapped in 2009 general elections. It will take some more time to get clarity on new Assembly Segments. In 2004, INC had won both these Segments.
Delimitation of the new constituencies will take place as per the population in the district. As per 2011 census, population in Guntur district is around 48 lacs. 5 new Assembly constituencies would increase as per 2011 census. Currently, there are two Assembly Segments in the city. New Segment will also included in Guntur Corporation. Both people and political party leaders are very much anxious on new segments.
