The farmers in Telangana region are now a distressed lot. Trapped with insurmountable debts, nearly 250 of them have reportedly ended their lives over last four months. On an average, there are reports that at least two farmers are committing suicide a day in the state in the Kharif season. As a matter of fact, nearly 40 farmer suicides were seen in Medak district after TRS assumed power, and 18 of them were recorded in chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s home assembly constituency of Gajwel. Warangal has now got dubious distinction of highest such deaths with around 54 suicides recorded so far in the past four months. According to a GO that was issued in 2004, currently still in force, the government should provide immediate financial and rehabilitation for families of farmers who have committed suicide irrespective of the reasons for that act. But this hasn’t happened at all, and the irony is there no one to even offer condolences from the government or officials. Opposition parties are asking TRS as to how United AP is responsible for TRS inaction in at least ensuring compensation for farmers in last four months!
