K. L. Rao Sagar Project, popularly known as Pulichintala project, which is seen as a boon for A.P. is back in focus. With increasing water levels of Pulichintala Project, which according to sources had already reached 11 tmcft mark, people in Adluru and Nemalipuri villages of Mellacheruv mandal in Nalgonda district are a worried lot. The Telangana government reportedly has demanded the government of Andhra Pradesh to release Rs. 40 crore immediately as a pre-condition for releasing 20 tmcft water in Pulichintala project. The demand was expressed by Telangana Irrigation Minister T. Harish Rao to his Andhra Pradesh counterpart Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao at a joint meeting of irrigation officials from both States .Harish said that the Telangana government did not have any objection to store 20 tmcft if rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) packages were paid.  “We don’t want the water to go waste into the sea, but at the same time people should not suffer,” he said. The TS government asked AP to release Rs 40 crore immediately and then only increase the storage in the project from the present 9 tmcft to 20 tmcft. Pulichintala Project is a multi purpose project serving irrigation needs, hydro power generation and flood control. It is a crucial irrigation facility for farmers of four coastal districts of West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam where irrigation facility for 13 lakh acres. It has 24 gates in all with balancing reservoir with a capacity of 46 tmcft.
