The University of Hyderabad (UOH) woke up to a rather surprising news of the controversial Vice Chancellor Prof. Ramakrishna Ramaswamy suddenly calling it quits with 18 months left for his tenure. This is the first time that a sitting VC, in the middle of his tenure has resigned. Though Prof Ramaswamy cited personal reasons for quitting, people who are following his rather curious ways of running the administration are not convinced.
Close sources to him say that he has been under severe pressure due to the restrictions imposed on him by the Ministry of HRD in the daily administration. Prof Ramaswamy has been under fire for some time now for his high handed way of running the administration, which included building a palatial bungalow for himself , irregularities in appointing officials and more importantly running the administration in caste lines, and the 2 recent student suicides also are attributed to his caste discrimination.
While he has been advised to proceed on leave till the MHRD accepts his resignation, rumours are string that Prof E Haribabu, Sociology department, who is the Pro-VP, could be the man for the job. Ever since the BJP came to power, Prof Ramaswamy has been under scanner and fire because of his erstwhile closeness to UPA.
