Less than two months after it was flagged off amidst much fanfare, Telangana CM KCR’s ambitious project of metro luxury bus with pink tinge (TRS flag color) is reportedly falling flat. Media reports mention that the 80 air-conditioned buses had hit the city streets during November. But they are struggling to find takers, notwithstanding the ‘hi-tech’ features. The occupancy rates on three of these four routes they ply is much below 35%, even as the RTC officials have set a minimum target of 73%. Passengers feel that the minimum fare of Rs 15 and an additional tariff of Rs 5 for every two kilometers is not an economically viable option for the daily travel. The buses which run on a cost of Rs 62 per kilometer needs to touch 73% occupancy ratio. This is to get the breakeven point but as of now the occupancy is between 30% and 35%. Some are also suggesting that the government needs to come up with some promotional ads and create awareness among the people. Let us see how this works.
