Congress party didn’t lose seats in AP alone due to bifurcation. But the effect was seen in many segments across Telangana, especially in and around Hyderabad where Congress reduced to smithereens in the general elections held during 2014. This was margin of 15-18 seats overall.
GHMC elections are a litmus test
These seats would have even titled the balance in the favour of Congress so that the party could have stormed back to power in Telangana. Anyway the upcoming GHMC elections are a litmus test to all major parties in Telangana region. TRS is planning to complete its victory cycle by securing Hyderabad for the first time.
TDP and BJP want to prove that they are still in the reckoning and this is a matter of prestige for them. Congress under YSR more or less made a clean sweep of Hyderabad in 2009, stunning TDP which lost all of its strongholds. Now Congress wants to wrest GHMC polls at any cost.
