The ambitious `free Wi-Fi' which was launched by the Telangana government in Hi-Tec City area in association with one of the leading private service providers in October 2014 has become a publicity gimmick. Residents and professionals living in the IT hub are disappointed that initiative has fallen flat.

Sources say that there are several connectivity issues being experienced in the hotspot areas. The TS government had launched free Wi-Fi spots at nearly 17 locations in city last year near Cyber Towers and Madhapur police station, Cyber Towers and Kothaguda junction as well as Cyber Towers and Raheja Mindspace with assurance of upto 750 megabytes per day for each user.

However, sources say that in areas close to Cyber Towers, the network 'AirtelWifiZone' is reportedly either untraceable or has connectivity issues. While this service was meant to promote more digital inclusion in the IT hub, the Wi-Fi network is hardly available in the assured areas.

When it was launched the government had assured of a higher speed of 40 mbps but users are barely able to open a browser even as the lack of information about this facility has reportedly left many clueless. Be it AP or TS, publicity seems to be high on the agenda whereas the ground reality when it comes to Wi-fi hotspots seems to be different.
