The backward Anantapur district is firmly all set to become an important place on the defence map of India. Recently on September 30, 2015, AP chief minister Chandrababu Naidu and Union defence minister Manohar Parrikar conducted `Bhoomi Pooja' for a brand new project.

This would house India’s largest defence systems integration complex being set up by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). The project is coming up at Palasamudram village of Gorantla mandal in Anantapur district with an investment of about Rs 1,500 crore.

This sprawling missile complex which is spread over 950 acres will enable manufacturing, tests and integration of missiles and also key defence equipment. This Anantapur facility is expected to be the second BEL unit in AP after one was started in the early 1980s at Machilipatnam.

The BEL integrated complex is poised to become the hub of all missile activity in the country. Naidu was ecstatic about the fact that Centre is granting several new projects to Andhra Pradesh post bifurcation. With defence clusters concentrated all these days in and around Hyderabad, it gave rise to hectic economic activity. Now it is AP’s turn with good support from Modi government!
