Sri Ramanujacharya Jayanti, or Ramanuja Jayanthi, celebrates the birth anniversary of Ramanujacharya, the famous South Indian philosopher who advocated that bhakti or devotional worship of Lord Vishnu in any form is the ideal method to attain salvation or moksha. In 2016, the date of Sri Ramanujacharya Jayanti is May 12 as per North Indian calendars.

It is believed that Sri Ramanuja was born in 1017 at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu and left his body and merged with the Supreme Soul in 1137 in Srirangam. The three major philosophical works of Ramanuja, who is also referred as Ilaiya Perumal in Tamil, are the Vedartha Samgraha (commentary on the Vedas), the Sri Bhasya (commentary on the Brahmasutras) and the Bhagavad Gita Bhasya.

Freedom to choose one or more personal deity and reach Brahman realization through Bhakti or devotion was preached by Sri Ramanujacharya. Today, this form of spiritual path is followed by majority of Hindus. Ramanujacharya preached that the world is real and taught to attain Brahman realization by intense devotion or reason or argument rather than intuition.

This was just opposite to the Vedanta of Adi Shankaracharya. Ramanujacharya organized temple worship and founded centers to propagate the devotion of Lord Vishnu and his consort Shri or Mahalakshmi.
