The fifth Tamil Solar month is an auspicious month not only for celebrations of festivals but also for weddings.  The most significance factor is two consecutive festivals following the Full Moon day with stars Thiruvonam (Shravana) and Avittam which will fall on the full moon day.


Avani Avittam, or Upakarma, as it is known in many regions, is one of the very significant rituals related with the Brahmin community and is celebrated mainly in the southern Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa. Here, Avittam is one of the 27 nakshatras or stars. It is generally a community observance and is held on the banks of a river or a pond or at Temples. It falls in the Tamil month of Avani, on the full moon day of the Hindu calendar. The Brahmins take a holy dip and then wear a new sanctified thread known as yajnopavit or janeyu.


Shravanmas are the sacred month of the Hindu religion. It comes after the Ashadh month and before the Bhadrapad month as Hindu calendar. This month have full of festivals and holiest occasions. Shravana month is totally fulfilled with happiness and joy. We can say Shravana month is a very sacred month because of all the festivals are celebrated by the Hindu peoples.


As per the Hindu calendar, Shravana comes during August to September and the month generally begins during the new moon or full moon as pertaining to the lunar calendar or with the sun's entry into LEO according to the solar calendar. The Tamil Calendar celebrates this month during August to September period, i.e. the period of Avani. On Purnima (full moon day), or during the course of the month the star 'Shravan' rules the sky, hence the month is called Shravana.
