The Centre has  understood and has agreed to grant sweeping financial powers on the army to meet the current critical deficiencies in ammunition, spares and different types of armament following a security report review conducted after last year’s Uri terror strike.

Sources said that the financial powers offered by the government would facilitate the emergency acquiring of ammunition and spares worth an estimated around  Rs 40,000 crore over the next few years time frame, but its subject to availability of budgetary support.Directly purchasing ammunition and spares for in-service equipment is not that complicated than making a direct purchase right from scratch, army officers said.

The sources said this bestowed financial powers to the army’s vice chief would be used initially to buy 46 types of ammunition including that for tanks and artillery guns and spares which includes different types of hi-tech  weapons.The sources said the government was also considering a huge proposal relating to acquiring  22 types of armament and about half a dozen types of mines.
