Mercedes-Benz has been upset with the new rules, ever since the ban on diesel cars with over 2.0-litre displacement in Delhi-NCR. So, the German carmaker’s Indian arm appealed to the Supreme Court to lift the said ban, while it also offered to pay environmental cess to the tune of 1% of the car’s value.

It is the Supreme Court that announced a month ago that it would consider lifting the said ban on two-plus litre diesel cars. The apex court also said the ban would be lifted, if the manufacturer environment cess on the total value of the car. So, the Mercedes-Benz has come forward to offer a 1% cess.

With its high profile customers concentrated in Delhi-NCR for the German luxury carmaker, the Mercedes-Benz has been the worst affected, as 28 percent of its total sales happens in the National Capital. The ban also led to a decline in the total sales of the German automobile manufacturer.

The affidavit filed by the Mercedes-Benz India on July 8 also stated that the ban has led to other states enforcing a similar ban on diesel vehicles. Following the Delhi-NCR ban, the NGT, in Kochi, on May 23, also banned registration of diesel vehicles over 2,000 cc, before the order being stayed by the Kerala High Court on June 10, 2016. The current ban in the Delhi-NCR will affect the sales of almost all of the sedans and SUVs of the Mercedes-Benz, as the German carmaker is into the making of premium high-end luxury cars.

The last hearing on July 4, 2016, saw the SC announce its willingness to lift the ban, if a one-time environment cess is paid. The Supreme Court hearing on the plea of the Mercedes Benz has been scheduled for a hearing on Friday, August 12, 2016, where one is likely to see a different turn of events.
