Reportedly onion prices in the country have increased by over 400 per cent after march, said minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution ram Vilas Paswan in lok sabha on Tuesday. The average retail price of onion on december 3, 2019, was recorded to be Rs 81.9 per kilogram in comparison to Rs 15.87 per kilogram in march 2019.
While prices are expected to gradually decrease as fresh onion imports have arrived, it has already led to a lot of chaos among citizens. Though prices are believed to come down, onion prices on tuesday stayed above the Rs 100/kg mark for the second week in a row.
The average onion price in delhi is approximately Rs 96 per kilo while it is Rs 102 in Mumbai; Rs 100 in chennai and Rs 140 in Kolkata. In southern states, the prices are even higher: Rs 160 per kilo in thiruvananthapuram, kozhikode, Mayabunder and Rs 150 per kilo in tirupati, ernakulam, thrissur, and Palakkad.
