 “Loafer” is about a happy-go-lucky guy, Raja (Varun Tej) who is light hearted, greedy and fun loving. He was torn apart by his parent’s separation in the early age, and grows up with his father in Jodhpur. Varun works with his father and cons the local people and Tourists around. Accidently he meets up with Parijatham (Disha Patani) and falls in love at first site. Then he starts the game to woo his lady love until she accepts his love. But things fall apart when she gets kidnapped by goons lead by Mukesh Rushi. Following the trail Varun reaches his hometown and where he gets to meet his mother Lakshmi (Revathi), which adds a complication into his life.  As this family drama fable with a flash back episode tucked in, it turns out Murali (Posani) had a motive which is connected with him. Loafer is a simple story told in a most cinematic way possible.

Varun Tej is growing in strength and showing the different shades of his acting apart from sentiment, which comes to him naturally. He romances and even fights for the right. The movie completely belongs to Varun Tej and should be considered a high milestone for the bright career ahead of him. Disha Patani looks gorgeous, curvy and lovely. She does her part well in her debut film. This character looks a bit under cooked for her energy levels. Revathi, Mukesh Rishi and Posani are well-acted. There is no proper characterizations to anyone of the lead actors. Charandeep and Harish Uthaman leaves a mark as a rugged goons. Ali, Brahmanandam, Sapthagiri, Dhanraj and Sandy failed to tickle the funny bone.

Mother sentiment is always an area of great interest. Audience love to watch it even today but on one major condition if it’s told in an emotionally engaging way and given a different treatment. As far as “Loafer” is concerned it speaks about the same old typical ordinary story of separating from mother, newly found love, separation, misunderstanding, fighting for the right and reuniting the family. The story of “Loafer” has been told in a very simple way, it has the feeling of old wine served in new bottle. Star cast looked good, but the director Puri Jagannadh was unable to make full use of his writing talent. He as a director was fine but as a writer he failed to dominate. As a director Puri Jagannadh gave his best effort for Polam fight sequence, Revathi emotional conversation with Varun Tej and his funny conversation with Charandeep. Its’ more like a character reversal of Amma Nanna Tamil Ammayi.

In the new age period of 2015, it’s really unusual and courageous of the film maker to even think of conceiving a film on this subject. May be the narration was quite different from the final product and that may also be the reason why there was not a huge promotion campaign planned for this Varun Tej starrer after the critically acclaimed “Kanche”. It seems that the maker already knew that they have a loser in their kitty.

The film starts on a very mystifying note, with no proper explanations about its key characters, their origin or their work. The viewer’s keeps guessing how Revathi has liked Loafer Posani in the first place. Saying that even if leave all the logics aside, one fails to contemplate how a filmmaker like Puri didn’t even care about setting up the basic motives of the important characters. Till intermission the movie keeps moving on its own as if viewers are just puppets who will enjoy whatever is shown. And the top of it, Post interval director turns repetitive. Coming to other technical aspects, Dialogues are fine at places and music by Sunil Kashyap is mediocre. But the background score by Sunil is top notch and touching. Cinematography by P G Vindha is brilliant. The exotic locales of Rajasthan are eye catching. Art work is realistic. The production values of “C K Entertainments” are alright.

At times after watching a film one must have one thought in the mind that why on earth this movie was made in the first place. What was the creative team behind thinking while working for this film and how did they come up with an idea of making a complete movie on such a thin, rotten and completely uninteresting point. “Loafer” is the latest example of such a movie which fails to impress miserable from its first scene itself and falls flat.
