Story

Director Thiru, known for his hits with Vishal like Theeratha Vilayaattu Pillai, Samar and Naan Sigappu Manithan, is back on screen joining hands with the father-son duo Karthik - Gautham Karthik (who has delivered a hit lastly with adult comedy Iruttu Arayil Murattu Kuthu), for Mr. Chandramouli. Here's team AP Herald's exclusive first on net Mr. Chandramouli review.

Raghav (Gautham Karthik) is a carefree guy who leads a happy life with his father, Chandramouli (Karthik), and he falls for Madhu (Regina Cassandra). However, things take an ugly turn as Raghav clashes with Azhagar (Mahendran) and Vinayak (Santhosh Prathap) who run a cab service business. Was Raghav able to succeed in his revenge mission after Azhagar inflicted personal losses is what Mr. Chandramouli is all about.

Star Performance

Gautham Karthik impresses only in the few stunt sequences, and otherwise, he's just ok and is a bit improved compared to his previous flicks. Karthik is a charm and his chemistry with son Gautham as well as Varalaxmi are a treat and act as the perfect comic relief.

Regina Cassandra oozes oomph in a bikini and other skimpy attires, and serves the purpose of glam and romancing the hero alone, in a cliched, regressive role. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar is effective in her cameo. Mahendran is casually menacing while Santhosh Prathap is over the top hamming. The rest of the cast is just about adequate.

Techinical Team

Background score by Sam CS is perfect as it matches the mood of the movie, while of his songs, except Yethetho Aanaene, none pass muster. Richard M. Nathan's cinematography is top notch capturing the sensuous Krabi song as well as the spectacular stunts and chases convincingly. Suresh's editing could have been better as the first half lacks pace.

After working with Vishal so far in his career, Thiru has joined hands with Gautham Karthik for the first time in Mr. Chandramouli, and this time he's got the support of Karthik as well. While he has got good characters for his leads, a boxer and an app developer, he has failed to sketch them well, as none serves the purpose. Especially, Regina Cassandra is made to prance around in skimpiest of clothes in songs and speaking regressive, old-fashioned and pro-stalking dialogues.

Analysis

The love track is artificial, and while the whole movie was expected to be about cab service crimes, there's not much emphasis on that, as the movie enters into regular hero vs villain drama. And even among villains, Mahendran tries to keep the audience engaged while Santosh Prathap is annoying. The first half moves pointlessly with scenes that are presented as comedy, but all jokes being sexist or body shaming and fall flat.  Mr. Chandramouli also doesn't make proper use of the relationship thread between Varalaxmi Sarathkumar and Karthik.

While the one sizzling Yethetho Aanaene song impresses, Sam CS is felt only in the BGM and makes one wonder if this was the person who scored for Vikram Vedha. All said Mr. Chandramouli had a good premise, and good characterizations but falls badly as a huge letdown, with the medical condition forced as a twist, and the uninteresting cat and mouse game without thrills.
