The movie offers a role like never before for Makkal Selvan Vijay Sethupathi, who has shined throughout the movie with his subtle underplay and has excelled with emotions. Trisha gets a role of her lifetime, as Jaanu she overtakes Jessie of Vinnaithandi Varuvaya and impresses with beautiful expressions and Pretty looks, styled perfectly by Shubashri and Chinmayi's voice is a huge strength to the character. Supporting actors Bagavathi Perumal and Devadarshini evoke some genuine laughs, while Janakaraj is adequate. The younger versions of Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha, Aaditya Baskar and Gouri have done a neat work with lovable expressions.
Govind Vasantha's music is impressive with a soothing background score and of the songs, Kaadhale, Anthathi, Life of Ram are extremely addictive numbers. Cinematography by Mahendran and Shanmuga Sundaram is top notch capturing stunning visuals and presenting a colorful 96. Editing by Govindaraj makes sure 96 is crisp and engaging. Premkumar has made a good debut with 96, which brings together the unusual pairing of Trisha and Vijay Sethupathi for the first time, and the movie appeals right from the casting of the lead actors who beautifully fit in their roles.
Premkumar has weaved a screenplay filled with moments of cute love and nostalgia, as the screenplay takes the viewers on a trip down the memory lane, and has enough moments to remember and cherish. While the first half establishes the characters, the second half is filled with intense moments, culminating in a memorable climax. With a good technical team including amazing music by Govind Vasantha, visuals by Mahendran and Shanmuga Sundaram, 96 despite pace issues, works well as a treat for romance lovers with its moments that sparkle.
