Story:

After making a stunning return to form after the disastrous Dev with his Deepavali winner, the blockbuster Kaithi, actor karthi has joined hands with his sister in law jyothika for Thambi directed by thriller specialist Jeethu Joseph. While the director has set high standards with Drishyam, it is to be seen what he has here. Here's team ap Herald's exclusive first on net Thambi review.

Sathyaraj is a local politician working for the welfare of tribal people in the Mettupalayam area and lives with his wife Seetha, Daughter jyothika and mother. Enters karthi who arrives as Sathyaraj's son who left the family before 15 years. Was karthi really the son of Sathyaraj, what is his agenda and what problems he faces is what Thambi is all about.

Performances:

Karthi as the skilled conman who gets into an unexpected situation where he has to deal with family, affection, love and several unexpected dangers, is excellent in a role with multiple shades and emotions. jyothika complements him perfectly with her understated, subtle portrayal and excels in emotional moments. sathyaraj and seetha are excellent in their limited scope while the rest of the cast including Sowcar Janaki, Bala, Anson Paul, and Ammu abhirami is adequate.

Technical Departments:

Govind Vasantha rises the tension in few sequences which are thrilling and his score is soothing for most parts. Of his songs, Hello Saare and Thaalelo are hum worthy. Cinematography by RD Rajasekhar captures the family set up perfectly, while editing by Vinayak keeps the movie engaging.

Analysis:

Much like Drishyam/ papanasam, Thambi is yet again a family backdrop thriller, where the protagonist sneaks into a family as someone they are in search of and how long he can sustain, and what are the challenges he faces forms the crux of the movie. karthi holds the movie with his charm and natural act, while jyothika and Sathyraj lend him great support. The plot and the twist are presented in such a way that you are engaged thoroughly, and that makes Thambi entertaining. All said, Thambi is a fairly engaging decent family thriller with an unexpected twist.

Verdict: A decent family thriller from Karthi.
