What Is Good
- Couple of mediocre technical aspects
What Is Bad
- Shreyan Kapoor
- Situation less Songs
- Forced Adult Comedy
- Unnecessary drags in the second Half
- No Emotional Arc between the characters
- No Chemistry between the lead pair
Vijay (Shreyan Kapoor) brother of Ammiraju (Mukesh Rushi) returns to India; at his house, he meets and falls in love with Shravanthi (Pragathi). But she is the daughter of Bikshapathi (Kota Srinivasa Rao), whose son Abhimanyu Singh is a notorious gangster in Basthi. In one of his issues he kills the wife of Ammiraju’s associate. Which makes Shravanthi vulnerable to the rival attacks. Things turn around, when she gets kidnapped by two masked vigilantes. And Abhimanyu totally doubts his opponent Ammiraju for this. Then rest of the story is all about how Vijay plays some mind games to marry Shravanthi.
Shreyan Kapoor son of Veteran actress Jayasudha, makes his debut with this film, the expectations were little higher but this came as a disappointment to me. There were many scenes which looked artificial and the dialogue delivery was also not up to the mark. Pragathi does a super confident debut and does justice to her character. A charming performance indeed. Lipsika Bhasyam dubbing to Pragathi sounded sweet and worked well with the character. Mukesh Rushi handles the role of brother and don well. Abhimanyu Singh is competent as hotheaded villain. Comedians Snigdha, Ali, Sapthagiri and Satya failed in tickling the funny bones. The rest of the characters were totally limited in their short roles.
Story of the film is typical formula ridden and certain part of it reminds us of films like Dhee, Dhenikaina Ready, Jayeebhava and Ready. The movie starts off dumb, with the first half of the movie and the beginning of the second half begrimed. The movie doesn’t seem to have air of comedy and romance which is the life and soul of rom-com films. The romance between the lead pair is blunted. Emotional scenes between the main characters look unrealistic and dim. They fail to evoke any feeling. The last 20 minutes leading to climax are fiendish. Film maker Vasu Manthena stumbles completely in creating a major conflict or reason for everything. And the chirpy music also helps in navigating chaos in the movie little further. The music of the film is composed by Pravin Immadi and he provided couple of hummable tracks. But songs situations act like speed breakers in the movie. The background score was not upto the mark and musician inspired few tunes from Jeans and RGV films. Cinematography by V. K Gunasekhar is fine. The editing of the film is jerky and the transition between the scenes are very abrupt. A little trimming down could have sustained the pace. The production values of “Vazman Productions” are alright.
Basthi is a typical teenage rom-com in Tollywood. Director Vasu has chosen a thin storyline based on the faction and love. He has concentrated more on to bring the teenage love story with emotional family background and have focused only on the love life of the teenagers leaving away the emotional attachments. The director hasn’t worked on the script keeping the current trend in mind. There many such subjects of love and he was unable to catch the freshness in scenes. The only saving grace is charming performance by Pragathi. All in all, Basthi is a 116 minutes of slow torture.
Priyamani has 'Money Troubles' The national award winning actress Priyamani, who had shot to fame with her award-winning act in the Tamil flick Paruthi Veeran, and had also starred in films of top directors like Maniratnam, Bharathiraja, and Balu Mahendra, had set out on a glam attack in Telugu, and performance oriented roles in Malayalam.
