Actor Rahul Bose pledged to donate his organs upon his death on the sidelines of a panel discussion on organ donation organized by CII’s Indian women Network and the delhi chapter of Young Indians in the capital recently. The actor signed a giant card that proclaimed “I am an Organ Donor” in the presence of experts, doctors, and social workers from the field. This was preceded by a panel discussion, in which the actor was joined by Prof Anupam Sibal, transplant surgeon Dr. Arvind Soin and Pallavi Kumar from Mohan Foundation, an NGO working towards improving awareness about organ donation.

Elaborating on what drew him to the cause, rahul said, "This cause is the easiest in the world. There is nothing that you have to do right now except bathing yourself in the glow of satisfaction, which you deserve. I think there is no sacrifice. The organs will help others when you die and you lose nothing. For me to be here is the easiest thing in the world." Calling the event an effort to create awareness, and thereby creating an ecosystem conducive to increasing deceased organ donations in India, Pallavi Kumar said, “If we increase the rate of deceased organ donations in India, not only will we be able to save thousands of lives each year but also ensure that no one living person should have to donate their body organ to save their loved ones.

If we have enough deceased donors, we can avoid this.” Prof Sibal highlighted the need to connect organ donation to important milestones in the lives of most people. “If we give people the option of registering as an organ donor when they get a driver's license when they get a PAN card, and when they get a voter ID, we will be able to reach out to almost the entire adult population of the country," he explained. Dr. Soin gave the example of croatia and Spain, where the percentages of organ donors are among the highest in the world, at 33 per million people and 47 per million people respectively.

“In India, this rate is just 0.6 per million. So, we do have a long way to go but the first step is to remove any stigma or lack of awareness there is about organ donation,” he said. The experts also answered queries from the audience after the discussion.
