Veteran south Indian actress Anjali Devi passed away on today at private hospital in Chennai. Anjali Devi was unwell for quite some time and was receiving treatment in a private hospital. Anjali Devi was born as Anjani Kumar (Anjanamma) later director C. Pullaiah changed her name to Anjali Devi after entering into films. She was born on Aug 24th 1927 in Peddapuram, East Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh. Anjali Devi made her debut as Lohitasya in Raja Harischandra’s film in the year 1936. She was well-known for mythological roles. She mesmerized the audience with her performance as Sita in “Lava Kusa” film. She has acted in nearly 500 films which include 1936 language. She produced many films along with husband P. Adinarayana Rao, a music director, producer and a lyricist. The couple jointly produced many Telugu films under the banner Anjali Pictures. Anjali Devi won Film fare Award several times for Best Actress. She was also the recipient of Raghupathi Venkaiah Award (2005) and was conferred the Ramineni Award (2006), apart from receiving several other honours. Some of her landmark films in Telugu are Suvarnasundari , Keelu Gurram, Lava Kusa, Sri Krishna Tula Bharam, Anarkali, Chanchu Lakshmi and many more. She was 86 and is survived by 2 sons and her granddaughter Saila Rao is also an actress. The entire industry was filled with tears after knowing her dismiss.
