DAR Motion Pictures ‘The Lunchbox’, having emerged as the highest grossing foreign film on the American box office in 2014, has crossed yet another milestone by making it to the coveted list of the top 5 highest grossing Indian films in the U.S., ever. Produced by Arun Rangachari, Anurag Kashyap, and Guneet Monga, Ritesh Batra’s directorial debut stars Irrfan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Nimrat Kaur.
‘The Lunchbox’, which has collected over USD 4 million and still counting, made it to this prestigious list by replacing the Shahrukh Khan headlined mega hit ‘My Name Is Khan’. This box-office success has positioned this engaging yet honest love story right alongside Bollywood biggies such as ‘Chennai Express’, ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘Dhoom 3’.
Apart from the US, ‘The Lunchbox’ has recorded strong international collections, especially from European markets where it is still going strong in France, Germany, Sweden among other markets. Furthermore, the film has also done exceedingly well in the domestic market, collecting over INR 28 crore.
Set in Mumbai and made at a modest budget of under INR. 10 crore, ‘The Lunchbox’ is about a strange yet unique relationship between a young housewife (Ila played by Nimrat Kaur) and a lonely man (Saajan Fernandes played by Irrfan), a journey of discovery and sharing, triggered by a mistaken delivery in Mumbai’s famously efficient lunchbox delivery system.
